Panmen was originally known as Dragon Gate,and was built by Wu Zixu onthe orders of King Helu of Wu in 514BC,It was one of eight gates in the city wall,and was also known as the Dragon Land and Water Gate.The city wall originally built of rammed earth,but in the fifteen year of the Tianbao reign of Wuyre Kingdom,during the Wudai period (922AD),it began to be replaced with a brick wall.In the song dynasty the gate was matched with a tower,but this was destroyed in the early Yuan dynasty,The present Panmen Gate was built in the late Yuan dynasty.Although is was renovated many times in the Ming and Qing periods,the basic from remains unchanged from this period.The water gate is divided into two stages,and the land gate is fitted with a "bottleneck"entrance.It is now the only ancient city gate in China which combines both a road and a canal entrance.It is now a special tourist sightseeing spot within Suzhou.
